Sadly my brother, Douglas Buchanan, passed away on the 19th May 2024 after a short illness, a week short of his 72nd birthday. Doug was born in Gatooma, Southern Rhodesia and went Munro, Sir John Kennedy and Jameson Schools. All his life he wanted to be a teacher and went to Teachers College in Bulawayo, then taught at Marandellas, Sinoia and Umtali Junior Schools. He moved near Sandhurst, England in 1981 where he taught maths at Eagle House School, a feeder school for Wellington College. Always a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, he spent his retirement presenting “Math Challenges” to young schoolkids; this involved putting fun into maths by using games and puzzles. He was in demand by schools throughout the UK and Ireland, and was even invited to do presentations in Kenya; in one of his ”Math Challenges” he had 160 kids from 38 schools. He was also a tireless volunteer, helping visitors at Gatwick Airport during the 2012 Olympic Games (he was one of the few volunteers honoured to meet then-Prince Charles), organizing matches for his local bowls club, and driving a bus on outings for elderly folks . Doug will be missed.
