With a name derived from the Greek kometes, meaning a ‘long-haired’ star, comets are not stars, but ancient celestial icebergs of the Solar System. They are like dirty snowballs, mostly made of ice. They partly evaporate when they swing close to the hot Sun so they become visible with a long tail.
