Cut two circles of the same size out of your paper sheet.
Draw a snow globe on one, and on the other draw what you would like to see in the globe (a snowman, a winter scene, village, santa…).
Make sure to draw in the centre of your paper circles and that the scene/figure is smaller than the globe. With a magical trick your figure/scene will appear inside the globe, would you like to know how?
Pick a pencil/chopstick and stick one circle on it, firmly, with tape.
Then flip it and glue on the other side the second circle, see the pictures as a guide.
Now you are ready to make the magic happen: start to roll your thaumatrope between your hands and be prepared to amaze everyone with your creation.

Thaumatropes were popular toys in the 19th century. They are made of a disc with different images on the two sides. Rotating the disc very fast, the two images “combine” to make one. This happens thanks to the so called persistence of vision. Animation uses a similar effect to create a video out of a series of frames. Check zoetrope or stroboscope light for more insights!
