We are very excited that the 15th Maths Week is almost here. And we are ready for it. The team has been working hard for months to reinvent Maths Week for the Covid world. Read down to see some of the wonderful free events, activities and competitions that you can participate in with hundreds of thousands others. Teachers have now registered over 190,000 pupils from all over the island
Make sure you REGISTER and show your school is a Mathstastic School. 

In this newsletter we are highlighting the many activities and events taking place for maths week

Coming up in this issue:
MathsWeekTV
MathsWeekTV will be live everyday with a show for primary at 10:10 am and a show for secondary at 11:11am (the times are to allow teachers time to organise the class and set up the technology). The shows will be normally 30 minutes presentation with some discussion afterwards.
You can watch these shows live streamed on the MathsWeekTV page
Shows will be recorded and made available to view online for the rest of Maths Week.

We are also looking for a small number of classes to act as "studio audiences" booking for these is open now - just click on the link in the schedule below.

Maths Week 2020 Olympiad

Monday 13 - Friday 16
For 1 hour in your classroom


For this year’s festival, Maths Week Ireland are delighted to announce the all-inclusive Maths Week Olympiad. This INNOVATIVE event has been created by the Living Maths Team from South Africa and is an Olympiad that will challenge the best students but include and encourage students of all abilities.  
The Olympiad includes question papers FOR ALL AGES – from Senior Infants / Year 2 all the way up to Transition Year / Year 12
We realise the importance of encouraging as many learners as possible to have a positive experience with maths so that they continue to enjoy and appreciate the subject throughout their academic lives and beyond.
The earlier learners participate in a fun competition, the more they will be comfortable with being challenged. The questions have been set in a similar style to International Olympiad standards and subsequently, we hope to introduce some new ideas and interesting topics.

Join maths quizmaster Franz Schlindwein for a fun quiz where the whole class works together on challenging problems.

Family Scavenger Hunt
October 10 & 11 all day 
ONLINE Event 
Audience: Families (Family + Maths) x (zany activities) = an unforgettable experience!  Join the whacky MC, Steve Sherman (Chief Imagination officer of Livingmaths.com in South Africa) for some mathematical mayhem.
Families will need to work together to accomplish missions from Saturday the 10th of October until Sunday afternoon.  You will join the activity via an app.

Connected Classrooms

Wednesday October 14
6 – 9-year olds at 11 am
10 – 13-year olds 1 pm
 
Living Maths will be conducting online maths shows to celebrate the Maths Week Ireland festival.
The events will be open to all primary schools that have access to the internet.  If your class has a webcam and microphone then you are ready to go! 
The lesson will be interactive and there will be a wide range of fun brainteasers, mathemagical tricks and other edutainment activities for the students to try.

Virtual Hamilton Walk
Friday October 16
Audience: TY (ROI); Year 12 (NI) and Adults interested in Maths

Hamilton Day-16 October- is the centerpiece of Maths Week Ireland. For it was on this day that William Rowan Hamilton made his famous discovery of the Quaternions. The story is renowned to mathematicians and physicists worldwide and remembered in the world’s only mathematical pilgrimage.

With the Covid restrictions we are organising a virtual walk which can be accessed on our website on Friday 16 October.

How do we know the distances from the earth to the sun and moon, from the sun to the other planets, and from the sun to other stars and distant galaxies? Clearly we cannot measure these directly. Nevertheless there are many indirect methods of measurement, combined with basic high-school mathematics, which can allow one to get quite convincing and accurate results without the need for advanced technology (for instance, even the ancient Greeks could compute the distances from the earth to the sun and moon to moderate accuracy).
These methods rely on climbing a "cosmic distance ladder", using measurements of nearby distances to then deduce estimates on distances slightly further away; we shall discuss several of the rungs in this ladder in this talk.

Here we feature several online games that your students can participate in, such as Target Boards and Mangahigh

During the Lockdown from March to July Targetboards ran every day, with thousands of pupils playing and practising their arithmetic. 
Targetboards will run during Maths Week with a junior and senior board each day. 
The class works together to find as many ways they can of making up the target number using the numbers given on the board.

Hands-on, Interactive and Team-based Maths Activities

We will have other online games available for Maths Week, but also lots of resources for hands-on, team based maths activities that will inspire and motivate pupils.

What's On?



The Have you got Maths Eyes? 2020 photo competition launches during Maths Week.

Having Maths Eyes changes a person’s view of mathematics from being something everyone just does in school to appreciating that maths is all around us and is something we use every day in real and meaningful ways. Each year during the Maths Week Ireland festival, the Have you got Maths Eyes team launches the annual photo and poster competition. Students and teachers are encouraged to explore their surrounding environment to capture maths at play. The overall winners for the 2019 competition will be announced very soon.  


 
Global Maths Week
 
Coinciding with Maths Week Ireland this year is this international celebration which promises to bring joyous maths across the world.
There are many online programmes that you can participate in available at their site between 10 - 16 October. Highlight will be Each day of the week, GMP co-founder Dr. James Tanton will present a lesson on the topic of Exploding Dots.

While the live sessions will be all on New York time, James has kindly agreed to do a special MathsWeekTV show for us on Friday16 October at 11:11 am.  
Space Week
Space Week is taking place this week around Ireland. You can find some great downloadable resources and activities for every kind of group and information on dozens of events around the country on www.spaceweek.ie
