16th of October is the centre piece of Maths Week Ireland
for on the 16th October in 1843 William Rowan Hamilton, Ireland's greatest mathematician, in a flash of inspiration saw the equations of quaternions in his mind's eye and scratched them in the wall of Broome Bridge at the Royal Canal in Cabra. Now over 150 years later we have a full week throughout the Island of Ireland celebrating mathematics and its applications ....

Booking opening on 24th September for RIA Maths lecture: The Hamilton Lecture 2009 "Noncommutative Algebra : from Hamilton to our time" The Royal Irish Academy commemorates "Hamilton Day" on the 16th October every year. RIA president, William Rowan Hamilton discovered Quaternions on this day in 1843 while walking to a meeting of the society. This year's Hamilton lecture is by distinguished matematician and Fields Medal winner Professor Efim Zelmanov of the University of California, San Diego. The venue is the Burke Theatre TCD and the time is (Friday 16 October 2009) 7.30pm.
Hamilton's board game on display at RIA for Maths Week
Hamilton's Icosian Boardgame will be on public display in the Reading Room in the library in the Royal Irish Academy on 19 Dawson St., Dublin from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday Oct. 11 to Friday Oct. 16.

Maths Week Ireland 2009 a great success!
The 4th Maths Week Ireland has been the biggest ever with participation throughout the island according to main organiser, Eoin Gill. " The week itself is over but the impact must be sustained throughout the year. Reports from all partner centres indicate that it was bigger and better. We are working on an initiative to sustain the awareness with activities throughout the rest of the school year. Plans for next year already promise more widespread participation and more diverse activity." In the meantime to catch up on events through newsprint, radio and TV coverage: daily in the Irish Times, radio programmes such as Morning Ireland, Tubridy Show, Dave Fanning Show on RTE and LMFM, 4FM, WLR, Dublin City FM, Beat FM. World Maths Day 2010 3rd March - registration ends 1 March World Maths Day is an online fun maths challenge with participants from all over the world. Over 38,000 schools took part last year.
