Since Covid hit Ireland, Colm has made a small return to his Engineering roots and set up the Function Room Podcast. A podcast about the big numbers, the hard sums, the mathematics that defines, runs, shapes, changes, begins, ends, every things our lives and the world around us.

Colm is the writer and presenter of the multi-award-winning Colm O’Regan Wants a Word on RTE Radio 1 since 2016. He has also written and presented radio programmes and columns for BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service and RTE Radio 1 was heard across American Public Radio on the Moth Radio Hour.

Aoife works for Movement Strategies, a consultancy that specialises in analysing the movements of people. At work, she uses maths and statistics to figure out the patterns of large crowds at high profile venues like Wembley Stadium. Since finishing her PhD in evacuation modelling at the University of Greenwich, Aoife has worked with researchers across the world to figure out how we can use maths to make buildings safer.

In the fourth of a special series of podcasts for Maths Week 2019; Colm O’Regan is in conversation with Dr. Alan Hally and Evelyn Cusack. Alan is a meteorologist in the Research, Environment and Applications Division at Met Éireann. Evelyn Cusack is Head of Forecasting at Met Éireann.
Alan’s work is computer-based simulations of the weather and he has a keen interest in using probabilities to communicate weather forecasts. Whether it is a next day weather forecast or long range climate change prediction, mathematical models are used. This podcast reveals the mathematics at the core of all weather forecasting and climate change models, as well as touching on the important historical contributions of Irish scientists and mathematicians.
