Maths Week 2020 Results 22/10/20
The 15th Maths Week Ireland took place under Covid-19 restrictions in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Over those 15 years, Maths Week has engaged over two and a half million people!
Maths Week promotes a positive attitude towards maths and shows the importance of maths in our lives and the role it plays underpinning all of science, technology, engineering and other important fields.
This year was different, but after all the disruption, the organisers felt that Maths Week 2020 had to happen.
Thanks to all the team who worked hard and creatively to make this happen: Sheila Donegan, Diane Murphy, Ben Dolan, Kayleigh Foran. And also to Cordula Weiss who contributed this year and so much over the past few years and has moved on to new challenges in Germany. Wir wünschen ihnen viel Glück Cordula.
Thanks to participation and support of schools, teachers and pupils, parents, partners and sponsors we were all able to achieve this together. Looking forward now to making Maths Week 2021 even better with your help. Please complete our survey to help make this possible, Eoin.

Over 140,000 valid answers have been submitted by an estimated 18,325 pupils in 733 classes to the daily Targetboards activity.

Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin presented with Maths Week Ireland Award for Raising Public Awareness of Mathematics.
Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin was presented with the award at a socially distanced ceremony. The award is a hand-wrought bronze Mobius Strip fashioned by award-winning Dublin Silversmith Seamus Gill. The presentation was made by Dr Sheila Donegan and the citation and report can be read here
Maths Week Ireland Maths Map
HELP GET MATHS ON THE MAP
This exciting new project is funded by the ESB from Maths Week Ireland and will deliver the “Maths Map”. It will be a great resource for maths learning. This map that will show places of mathematical interest. This could include a place:
- where there is a maths activity (such as a maths trial),
- where maths is done (such as a university maths department),
- where a famous mathematician was born / educated / worked
- where something in the built or natural environment with mathematical significance
We are developing a portal where people can upload places of mathematical significance. To prepare material for the map we are looking for schools and the public to flag any relevant places in their area or that they visit. If you would like to share something in the meantime you can email mathsweek@wit.ie. Please put Maths Map in the subject box.

Hamilton Day-16 October- is the centerpiece of Maths Week Ireland. For it was on this day that William Rowan Hamilton made his famous discovery of the Quaternions. The story is renowned to mathematicians and physicists worldwide and remembered in this annual mathematical pilgrimage. This virtual walk comprises a video of the whole route with interviews with Prof Peter Gallagher, DIAS/ Dunsink Observatory, Dr Fiacre O Cairbre, Prof Tony O’Farrell and Anne van Weerden with Maths Week’s Eoin Gill as host. Gathering 4 Gardner Online Event
Each October, people gather around the world, in small and large groups, for Celebration of Mind events. These celebrate the legacy of Martin Gardner (1914-2010), a prolific non-fiction writer who turned on several generations to the joys of mathematics and rational thinking. His interests were very broad, and included the works of Lewis Carroll, close-up magic, and philosophy.
This year is the 10th anniversary of Celebration of Mind! Gathering 4 Gardner is hosting a virtual Celebration of Mind and they are inviting everyone who loves Alice in Wonderland, brainteasers, puzzles, the math of fiber arts, paper fun, skepticism, and magic of all types to join in. This week-long event includes videos, live presentations, and Q&A sessions for the curious of all ages.

DojoMór free ONLINE Coding Event
DojoMór is a fun day for young people ages 7 to 17 where they learn to create a simple game, build a website, and programme some electronics across Ireland in one day. Locations include Tralee IT, Cork IT, Dundalk IT, Waterford IT, Galway-Mayo IT, Dún Laoghaire IADT, Offaly County Council, Letterkenny IT and Maynooth University. John Hooper Medal for Statistics
This all island poster competition is now open! Students must work in small groups to investigate real questions using data. The poster can be about any topic; it should reflect or illustrate usage, analysis, interpretation and communication of statistics or statistical information. Apart from the monetary prize on offer there are many other reasons for students to take part in this poster competition. Students will:
- Learn to work as part of team
- Investigate real questions using data
- Use analytical their analytical and graphical skills
- Interpret statistical results
- Develop skills in written communication
