With the support from the Cervantes Institute Dublin, Maths Week Ireland is pleased two secondary schools in Dublin the chance to have Dr Fernando Blasco to present his Maths Magic Show show in their school to pupils studying Spanish.  The show will be in Spanish. Schools should bring more than 1 class together for this event.

A mathematician at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Fernando is one of Spain’s best known maths promoters. Dr. Fernando Blasco uses magic to introduce secondary school pupils and the public to topics such as prime numbers, knot theory, sudoku, topology, number systems, mind games, Rubik’s cube, calendars or quick calculations.

Fernando uses mathematical ideas in the tricks that rely on concepts that are studied at school and involve both arithmetical and geometrical properties. Fernando introduces calendars, geometrical shapes, knots, barcodes, banknotes and the relationship  between mathematics and arts. In this interactive show, with the help of the students, dates and numbers will be guessed, magical knots will be tied and untied as well as other amazing tricks with cards or ropes will be shown in this performance. The main aim of the show is showing that Mathematics is  everywhere: from serious applications, such as cryptography, to fun and leisure, having a mathematical magic

Fernando  has collaborated with TV shows in Spain and has played in Civic Centers, Science Museums, University Classrooms and other stage.  Blasco collaborates regularly with different media and has a Maths programme for all audiences in the Spanish National Radio (RNE). He is part of the “Public Awareness Committee” of the European Mathematical Society and President of the Communication Commission of the Spanish Royal Maths Society
