MathsWeekTV will will be back for Maths Week from 18 – 22 October 2021. We will broadcast two daily shows, one each for primary and secondary schools.

The line up will include some of our favourite presenters with some exciting new talent.

Primary

Monday 12th – 10:10am

Number patterns with Susan Okereke

Audience: Age 7-10; 2nd-4th class (ROI); Y4-Y6 (NI)

Maths Week welcomes one of UK’s most popular Maths teachers, Susan Okereke. Discover patterns as she demonstrates how times-tables are related to each other through the magic of colouring in. Showing how different times-tables develop patterns on a 100 grid. Make sure to have your pens and colour pencils at the ready!

Susan is a maths educator who passionately believes that numeracy (the ability to use maths in a real life context) is an essential basic skill that everyone should be confident at, like reading and writing. She challenges negative views of maths by creating and delivering maths content in a way that is accessible, memorable and confidence building.

Tuesday 13th – 10:10am

Big & Small with Caroline Ainslie

Audience: Age 4-7; Jnr-1st class (ROI); Y1-Y3 (NI)

A show all about scale and the importance of scaling different shapes using balloons, soap bubbles AND paper, participants will have hands on opportunity to make two different scale models of a paper airplane.

 The participants will need paper, scotch tape and as an optional extra, round balloons and a pump so they can have a go too.

A Guinness World Record holder and award winning mathematical entertainer who has been part of Maths Week Ireland since 2013, Caroline loves to create activities that engage young leaners to love participating in maths. She calls it Bubbly Maths

Wednesday 14th – 10:10am

Maths Rocks with Andrew Jeffrey

Audience: Age 7-12; 2nd-6th class (ROI); Y4-Y8 (NI)

Maths Rocks features a series of mathematical surprises that you never knew about. You might even learn some magic tricks you can show other people.

Andrew is a teacher and author living in England. He loves maths and he loves magic, and can often be found doing both at the same time.

Thursday 15th – 10:10am

It Doesn't Add Up with Ken Farquhar

Audience: Age 7-12; 2nd-6th class (ROI); Y4-Y8 (NI)

Pick a card any card, is this it?? No? Any of these? Yes? How does that work? Could it really involve Maths? A show with no sleight of hand, just some fantastic maths. Dr Ken presents some of his favourite tricks revealing all the maths behind them. From mental mind reading, impossible volumes to miscounting mayhem and virtual juggling patterns.

An entertaining and engaging show linking many aspects of maths, science, and technology.

Dr Ken Farquhar is a World juggling champion and soap bubble scientist.  Dr Ken perfected his presentation skills by working as a street performer, mime, schoolteacher and in television. He has toured his shows in schools, science and arts festivals all over the world reaching over 1/2 million people. His inspirational shows cater for all levels and he is an honorary lecturer in science communication at the University of East Anglia.

Friday 16th – 10:10am

Momentous Maths with Kjartan Poskitt

Audience: Age 9-12; 4th-6th class (ROI); Y6-Y8 (NI)

One Sided Paper explores the strange Mobius strips that you can cut in half, yet they stay together! The Pennies that Reach the Sun starts with a chess board with one penny (or cent) on the first square. The next square has two, then four, then eight… and by square 48 the pile has passed the sun, and it still hasn’t stopped growing! The Six Card trick looks like a simple puzzle – but can you put the cards in the right order?

Kjartan Poskitt presented schools maths and science programmes for the BBC in the 1980’s. Since then he has become a wide-ranging author of plays, picture books and most famously his Murderous Maths series which have sold over 5million copies around the world. He has toured his  maths shows for the last 20 years including the last 13 years of Maths Week Ireland!

Our shows will be live streamed into schools all around the island of Ireland. We are seeking a limited amount of class groups to be part of a live audience for these shows. These class groups will take part in a live zoom call. You must have a fast broadband connection and be able to give consent for your class to take part.
