Dyscalculia and Maths Difficulties: An Overview

Around 6% of the population suffer from ‘Dyscalculia’, defined as a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers. For Maths Week Ireland, Stranmillis University College presents a free online presentation from Rob Jennings from the Dyscalculia Network. In his presentation, Rob will explore current and new definitions of dyscalculia and the awareness and prevalence of dyscalculia in the UK. He will also consider its co-occurrence with other conditions as well as maths anxiety. Key indicators of dyscalculia will be explored along with assessment for teaching intervention. The presentation will address why some learners just can’t do maths and the Jenga effect. Finally, it will highlight what an effective teaching intervention should look like and present some examples of teaching strategies for a range of maths topics including the power of maths games. This free online event will be of interest to educators in Primary, Post-Primary and Further Education, as well as parents of learners struggling with mathematics and adults struggling with maths.
