Skills: Arithmetic Operations (+ – x / ), problem solving

Resources: templates, pencils

In the puzzle sheets, unknown numbers are represented by pictures. These puzzles are a bridge between two big areas of mathematics: arithmetic and algebra. In Algebra we would call it ‘simultaneous equation’ and would typically represent numbers with symbols such as X and Y. One definition defines it as ‘equations involving two or more unknowns that are to have the same values in each equation’.

These activities practice our everyday maths skills and take them a step further.

Thanks to Lorna Wilson, a secondary maths teacher, for creating this superb idea for Maths Week! We have created packs for students, in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, in English and as Gaeilge, at varying levels of difficulty. Find the packs at the bottom.
