Money Sense! Game

Money Sense! is a maths learning game for 5th & 6th classes, designed to improve counting skills and familiarise students with euro and cent cash amounts.

Skills: counting, money sense

Resources needed: printed templates (56 unique Coin Cards). The different coins giving cards different values (some values appear just once; others twice, there or four times)

Activity: The aim of the games is to train pupils to recognise different amount and values of coins. We twist some classical card games to be used with these special cards. We recommend starting with the ranking game, so pupils discover the cards and are more familiar with them when playing. Then you will have the choice between ‘high or low’, a game where you bet that your card will be the lowest or the highest; ‘snap the coins’, like the snap game but where players are turning their card one by one instead of all together; ‘keep it high’, a game where you always have to play a higher card than before.

Tá na hacmhainní ar fáil i nGaeilge thíos chomh maith.

Duration: ~20 min per game. However ‘snap the coin’ can feel endless. We recommend setting a time limit. For example, after 15 minutes, who has the most cards?

We recommend 2-6 players in a group depending of the game.

You should emphasis that the players are saying out loud the value of the cards.

Have a look at the full instruction and template. Download the full pack at the bottom of the page.

Animated instructions saved as a power point will help you clearly explain the rules to your class.
