Discover Science at UCD: A Brief Introduction to Coding Theory – 17th October.
The UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics is hosting a free in-person event for Transition Year, 5th and 6th Year students as part of the Maths Week Ireland celebrations. Only teachers can register for the event and not individual students. The event is free, but there are limited places available, so we encourage teachers to register for the event as soon as possible.
A QR code is a way to encode a web address using a pattern of black and white dots or squares, and many applications on our smartphones can read it. What happens if we – or the environment – remove or add a few black dots to a QR code? After all, a grain of sand, mud, insects, or smudges on the lens can alter our code. The answer lies in Coding Theory. In this workshop we will explore the ideas that make this work!
This involves a workshop on coding theory followed by an exhibition featuring mathematical games/puzzles with the Maths Museum of Catalonia.
Each teacher should provide the exact number of students attending from their class. We emphasise that students will need to be supervised at all times by their teachers. Parking is very limited on campus and we will send information about public transport links to UCD.
This event can be booked by Teachers and Guidance Counsellors ONLY.
Two sessions: First at 10:00 AM and the second at 11:00 AM.
