Hamilton Walk October 16th 1:30 pm
Join us for a journey through scientific discovery. The walk will retrace Hamilton's steps from Dunsink Observatory to Broombridge in Cabra where he had his Eureka moment. Hamilton performed a piece of mathematical graffiti by scratching his quaternion formulas on the canal bridge. In an act of mathematical vandalism. The walk commemorates Hamilton's famous creation of a strange new number system, called Quaternions, on the banks of the Royal Canal in Dublin on October 16, 1843. |

| RIA Hamilton Lecture: The Geometry and Algebra of the Mandelbrot Set16th October 6:00pm-8:30pm |
| This year’s Royal Irish Academy Hamilton Lecture features distinguished Harvard Professor Laura DeMarco on the algebra and geometry of the Mandelbrot (M) set. She will explore the many mathematical ideas that have been put applied to the Mandelbrot set which has been studied for 45 years and continues to baffle mathematicians. The talk will explore how our in-depth knowledge of M has provided insight into recent (and seemingly unrelated) research in geometry, dynamics, and arithmetic. |

Create a buzz in your classroom during Maths Week with I’m a Mathematician, Get me out of here. The student-led, online, STEM enrichment activity connects students to working mathematicians with diverse backgrounds, roles, and disciplines in maths. The activity supports students’ science capital. Through exploring profiles,30-minute, text-based Chats, follow-up questions, and voting, they’ll find common ground with mathematicians. Students explore what’s relevant to them and discover the everyday uses of their studies, beyond the classroom.
“Showing them how the maths content relates to their lives can be difficult. I really wanted to broaden horizons from their tunnel vision and, often insular, mentality.” –Lucy, Maths Teacher
Book a Chat, at any time, or between 14 and 18 October to celebrate Maths Week. This year’s focus is ‘Maths at Work’, aiming to shine a light on the variety of careers using maths on a daily basis. Maths Week at MATRIX x IMAGINARY Festival |
|
|
The Maths Week team was present at the 4 Day Matrix x Imaginary festival in Swizerland. The festival, hosted by the SwissMAP Research Station with US National Museum of Mathematics and Imaginary brought together math enthusiasts, educators, and innovators from around the world to explore the future of mathematics engagement. Eoin Gill, Cindy Lawrence and Chaim Goodman Strauss shared their experience of a Novel Trans-Atlantic Maths Meetup via the Portal. Eoin also presented activities based on the geometric curve stitching activities of Mary Boole. Mary Boole was a pioneering educationalist and developed these activities to make abstract mathematical concepts more tangible and engaging. Using simple materials like wool and stiff paper, her designs create intricate geometric patterns through curve stitching. The Maths week team have prepared a hands-on workshop where participants could create their own designs, experiencing the beauty of mathematics through tactile exploration. These designs are also available on our websites resources section.

| | Katherine Johnson (born August 26, 1918—died February 24, 2020) was an American mathematician who calculated and analyzed the flight paths of many spacecraft during her more than three decades with the U.S. space program. Her work helped send astronauts to the Moon. Coleman’s intelligence and skill with numbers became apparent when she was a child; by the time she was 10 years old, she had started attending high school. In 1937, at age 18, Coleman graduated with highest honours from West Virginia State College (now West Virginia State University), earning bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and French. She subsequently moved to Virginia to take a teaching job. In 1939, however, she was selected to be one of the first three African American students to enroll in a graduate program at West Virginia University. |

| Speed of the car
"I was walking along the road at three and a half miles an hour," said Mr Pipkins, "when the car dashed past me and only missed me by a few inches. "Do you know at what speed it was going?" asked his friend. "Well, from the moment it passed me to its disappearance round a corner took twenty-seven steps and walking on I reached that corner with one hundred and thirty-five steps more. "Then, assuming that you walked (3½mph), and the car ran, each at a uniform rate, we can easily work out the speed." |

A poultry poser
Three chickens and one duck sold for as much as two geese; one chicken, two ducks, and three gees were sold together for £25.00. What was the price of each bird in an exact number of pounds? |
|
Mistaking the hands
"Between two and three o’clock yesterday," said Colonel Crackham, "I looked at the clock and mistook the minute hand for the hour hand, and consequently the time appeared to be fifty-five minutes earlier than it actually was. What was the correct time to the nearest minute? |
| | Answers TIMING THE CAR As the man can walk 27 steps while the car goes 162, the car is clearly going six times as fast as theman. The man walks 3½ miles an hour: therefore the car was going at 21 miles an hour.
