Maths Week 2020 Olympiad

The Maths Week 2020 Olympiad is an innovative new event held in collaboration with Living Maths in South Africa. Its primary focus is to empower teachers and learners to find creative and concrete ways to help improve the standard of Maths in schools. We realise the importance of encouraging as many learners as possible to have a positive experience with maths so that they continue to make maths a subject choice as they go through their education. We understand the need to provide quality resources and materials to maths teachers. This Olympiad is one of several projects that continue making a significant impact on maths education around the world. We are delighted to be working with Living Maths; a member of ASTEMI.co.za – the official body that represents STEM competitions in South Africa.

The Papers

We have two sets of papers; for Northern Ireland and for the Republic. The Olympiad includes question papers for all classes primary and secondary. This is the only Olympiad of its kind (in the world) to cater for the foundation phase. The sooner the learners participate in a fun competition, the more maths awareness we can spread. The questions have been set in a similar style to International Olympiad standards and subsequently, we hope to introduce some new ideas and interesting topics. The papers consist of 20 questions and 5 BONUS questions. Every learner that takes part will receive a certificate (either bronze, silver or gold included in the online folder) for achieving marks from 1-20 out of 20. Any marks higher than 20 will receive a platinum certificate. This allows learners of ALL levels to take part and be recognised for their participation. The papers have been set to fit snugly with the curriculum. Once the papers have been written and marked, we will need you to focus on the IMPORTANT statistics and feedback sheets that accompany the Olympiad pack. This is where we differentiate ourselves with other competitions (our papers evolve according to YOUR feedback. The motivation behind the Olympiad is to encourage participation for all ages and levels, to deliver maths in an exciting format, to identify outstanding learners, offer free quality resources and to help learners and teachers improve their maths skills.
