When we think of MP3's, maths is not immediately what comes to mind. However, did you know that the trigonometry we learn in Leaving Certificate maths is used to make MP3’s? This talk presents how digital sound is represented in a computer (MP3 player or iPod).MP3's are actually compressed sound files, compressed using trigonometry. Without this approach, Digital Radio, iTunes, Torrent, etc, would not be commercially viable.
