Some of Hamilton\u2019s discoveries include Conical Refraction, <span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255)\">an optical phenomenon in which a ray of light, passing through a biaxial crystal along certain directions, is refracted into a hollow cone of light.<\/span><\/span><\/span> On 16 October 1834, while walking along the Royal Canal on the way to Dublin, Hamilton had an epiphany when he realized a solution for a problem he had been working on in the fundamental principles of Algebra. He invented Quaternions. His equation now carved into the Broombridge, 16 October is celebrated as Hamilton Day.
