Shopping Spraoi! Junior Game
Shopping Spraoi! Junior is a maths learning game designed for Junior and Senior Infants.
Skills: counting, money sense, Arithmetic Operations (+ – x / )
Resources needed: printed templates (Cut out die, 48 €2 Coins, 54 €1 Coins, 24 Shopping Cards). You can use your own toy coins in place of the template coins.
Activity: A fun playing shop activity. The aim of the game is to manage money and buy items from the shopkeeper. There are three levels to the game. The first level is to familiarise the players with the idea of €1 and €2 coins. Children are given a mix of coins and then tasked with sorting them into groups. You can have chats with them about how they’re sorting the groups. Level 2 then introduces the concept of receiving, saving, and using money to buy items. One child acting as a banker and one child acting as the shopkeeper, the rest of the players are shoppers. The banker throws the dice and hands out coins based on what’s shown, then the shopkeeper chooses a variety of items costing €1-€4. The shoppers will use their money to buy items from the shopkeep. Level 3 adds more expensive shopping cards so children learn about saving money to buy items. The most important part will be the discussion you will have with them at the end about how everyone spent their money. What can this game help us learn about Money Sense? Is it a good idea to save? Is it better to please ourselves now or save for later? Did you spend most of the money you had and how many items did that get you?…
