Aperiodic Monotiles and LLMs

Dr Chain Goodman-Strauss

Thursday 15 October

Maynooth University

Book Here

A monotile is a single shape that can be copied and fitted together to cover a surface completely, without gaps or overlaps. A square tile nd other shapes for instance can form a repeating or periodic pattern. If it is aperiodic, the shapes can fill the surface, but they can never form a repeating pattern. In 2022 such a tile - the hat tile- was discovered by David Smith. Chaim Goodman Strauss was one of the mathematicians that proved it was aperiodic.

More recently, Chair44 was announced as the first true three-dimensional aperiodic monotile discovered and its mathematical properties written up entirely by a large language model (LLM). Chaim Goodman Strauss will show why the Chair44 tile is a (strongly) aperiodic monotile and discuss the implications for mathematics in this transitional moment.

What’s On TOMORROW

October 16 at 1:30pm

Dunsink Observatory, Dublin

Hamilton Walk

The walk commemorates Hamilton’s famous creation of a strange new number system, called Quaternions, on the banks of the Royal Canal in Dublin on October 16, 1843. Quaternions now play a fundamental role in computer games and animation, special effects in movies, space navigation and many other areas. The walk will retrace Hamilton’s steps from Dunsink Observatory to Broombridge in Cabra where he had his Eureka moment.

The Mysteries of Prime Numbers

RIA Hamilton Lecture

In this year’s Hamilton Lecture, Professor James Maynard will explain why prime numbers are vital, both in pure mathematics and in the real world, and how current mathematics is able to make progress on some of the key questions which have occupied mathematicians going back to the ancient Greeks.
