Dear Maths Friends, I hope you are enjoying the Summer wherever you are.
Exciting news came last week from the International Mathematical Union (IMU) General Assembly in New York. The Assembly was taking place as a precursor to the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia this week. The ICM is the biggest and most prestigious maths gathering in the world, taking place every 4 years. In 2030 it will be hosted in Glasgow with the accompanying General Assembly coming to Dublin.
Congratulations to the Irish and Scottish teams who won such a prestigious bid against strong proposals from Hong Kong and Tokyo.
The Irish and Scottish mathematics communities are planning to use this occasion as a keystone event for a joint Scotland and Ireland Year of Mathematics in 2030.
Meanwhile planning continues for Maths Week 2026 around the island - don’t forget the dates 10 - 18 October. We are working on the website for this years festival. Somethings might not be working yet. If you are a teacher you can register your interest now.
We are working on the schools posters now and also creating new activities in partnership with Ireland State Saving and will tell you more about these in early September.
There are some really interesting events coming up -starting this weekend - read below for details.

Congratulations to the Irish Team who represented Ireland at the International Maths Olympiad (IMO) in Shanghai, China. The IMO is a worldwide competition for High School students, and the Irish team competed against 670 students from 117 countries, solving highly complex mathematical problems.
The team secured one silver and two bronze medals for Ireland. Ben Maquire earned Ireland’s fifth-ever silver medal, Angyang Li and Jack McAuliffe received bronze medals, and Owen Barron, Tianci Yan and Vitalii Halushko earned honorable mentions.
This is a great accomplishment that showcases Ireland’s dedication to Maths education. Read more about the team here.

Become a Champion in Abstract Games |

Do you enjoy abstract strategy/maths games? How would you like to join Team Ireland? |
|
|
|
The World Championship of Abstract Games for National Teams is ongoing, and we need at least 1 more team member to join the Irish Team. Learn and explore games previously unknown, and test your logical and deep thinking skills.
Mochalunt 2026 competition is all about introducing participants to different abstract games in a competitive (but fun) team-based event. The games are played in different rounds and consist of different game families (chess, territory, connection, mancala, alignment, checkers, and various others). It’s about learning new games and meeting new people through friendly competition. More than anything, it’s hours of fun!

If you’re interested in joining the team, contact Team Ireland Captain Henry Williams at henrythomaswilliams@gmail.com. |
