With this activity you will learn how to make sprites (your characters) move.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Pc\/tablet<\/li>\n<li>Internet connection<\/li>\n<li>Website: <a href=\"https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scratch.mit.edu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-content-boxes content-boxes columns row fusion-columns-1 fusion-columns-total-1 fusion-content-boxes-2 content-boxes-icon-with-title content-left\" style=\"--awb-hover-accent-color:#e9a825;--awb-circle-hover-accent-color:#e9a825;--awb-item-margin-bottom:40px;\" data-animationOffset=\"top-into-view\"><div style=\"--awb-backgroundcolor:rgba(255,255,255,0);\" class=\"fusion-column content-box-column content-box-column content-box-column-1 col-lg-12 col-md-12 col-sm-12 fusion-content-box-hover content-box-column-last content-box-column-last-in-row\"><div class=\"col content-box-wrapper content-wrapper link-area-box icon-hover-animation-fade\" data-animationOffset=\"top-into-view\"><div class=\"heading icon-left\"><h2 class=\"content-box-heading fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--h2_typography-font-size:23px;--fontSize:23;line-height:1.29;\">Instructions<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"content-container\">\n<h6><strong>Instructions<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>When you first land on scratch.mit.edu you can create an account if you\u2019d like to join the community or you can do it later.<\/p>\n<p>Click on \u201cCREATE\u201d and wait a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you are in the main coding environment you should see:<br \/>\n\u2013 on the left-hand side, a library with all the commands (color coded blocks)<br \/>\n\u2013 in the middle our coding area<br \/>\n\u2013 on the right-hand side, you will see the outcome of your coding<\/p>\n<p>To learn how to add a background and some characters (sprites) have a look at our activity:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathsweek.ie\/2025\/your-own-winter-scene-with-scratch\/\">https:\/\/www.mathsweek.ie\/2025\/your-own-winter-scene-with-scratch\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that your scene is ready, you have two ways of making your sprite move.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Using blue blocks:<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Click on the sprite you would like to program.<br \/>\nStart your algorithm with a yellow block (events), for example \u201cWhen green flag clicked\u201d.<br \/>\nThen add some movements using a blue block (motion category).<br \/>\nThere are several blocks, try them to choose the motion you need.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Using costumes:<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Some sprites, not all of them, have different costumes. You can check how they look like by clicking the folder at the upper left corner \u201ccostumes\u201d. To create an animation, you can combine it with a loop.
