by our Maths Week team with IZAK9 cubes funded by the Irish-American Partnership and facilitated by Franz Schlindwein and Ian Campbell has been progressing nicely in Northern Ireland Schools. Recently at Greenhaw Primary School pupils enjoyed playing with large-scale resources designed to positively engage them with maths. The project is aimed at primary pupils to improve their maths skills, working in teams both collaboratively and in competition.<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p class=\"last-child\">The pilot project will now move on to more schools across the border counties such as Steelstown PS and Gaelscoil Cholmcille, before heading to Termoncanice PS in Limavady and finally across the border, to Scoil Iosagain in It is an event established \u00a0by the school of mathematics, Trinity College and the Embassy of Poland In Ireland and commemorates mathematician and philosopher Jan \u0141ukasiewicz a post war refugee in Ireland. \u00a0He work found important applications in computing. He died in 1956 and was buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery in Dublin where he lay until his remains were repatriated to Poland with full state honours in 2022. \u00a0 and whose abilities were recognised given refuge in Ireland <\/p><p>. on the connections between the mathematics of knots, the physics of string theory and the work of logician Jan \u0141ukasiewicz. Distinguished Polish mathematician Prof. Piotr Sulkowski gave a fascinating talk on the fundamentals of knot theory and its applications in protein folding and string theory. It finished with unexpected connection back to the work of \u0141ukasiewicz, reminding us that we never know how maths may be useful in applications as yet unimagined.<\/p><p Why?<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>Because the opposite sides of the die always add up to 7. You can look like a real mind reader when someone rolls a 3. (Because you know the opposite side must be 4). The same is true for 2 and 5.<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>A Number Is Divisible by 3 If Its Digits Add Up to a Multiple of 3<\/p><p>You can also do a quick trick to see if a number is divisible by 3. <\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>First, you have to know the multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, etc. <\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>If you have a large number, like 312, you can tell if it is divisible by 3 by adding its digits.<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>3 + 1 + 2 = 6<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>Since 6 is a multiple of 3, 312 is divisible by 3.<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p><strong>3) You Can Use Your Fingers to Learn Your 9s Times Tables<\/strong><\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>Place both hands palms down in front of you.<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>Consider the problem 9 x 1. (Think: 1 = \u201cfirst\u201d)<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>Place your first finger down (that is the pinky of your lefthand).<\/p><p>How many fingers are to the left of your pinky? 0<\/p><p>How many fingers are to the right of your pinky? 9<\/p><p>9 x 1 = 09 (or more simply, 9)<\/p><p>\u00a0 Now try 9 x 2. (Think: 2 = \u201csecond\u201d)<\/p><p>Place your second finger down (that is the ring finger of yourleft hand).<\/p><p> How many fingers to the left of your ring finger? 1<\/p><p>\u00a0 How many fingers to the right? 8<\/p><p>o 9 x 2 = 18<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>It works for every math fact from 9 x 1 to 9 x 10.<\/p><p>2 Is the Only Even Prime Number<\/p><p>A prime number is a number divisible only by 1 and itself. Thefirst five prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11.<\/p><p>2 is a prime number because its only factors are 2 and 1.<\/p><p>Every other even number has 2 as a factor (so it can\u2019t be prime)!<\/p><p>When You Multiply Numbers with 1s, Weird Things Happen<\/p><p>Here is a weird math phenomenon:<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>1 x 1 = 1<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>11 x 11 = 121<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>111 x 111 = 12321<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>1111 x 1111 = 1234321<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>11111 x 11111 = 123454321<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>It just goes on and on like that!<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>Adding 9 Will Knock the Number Down<\/p><p>Adding 9 can be tricky to learn, but not when you think about it this way.<\/p><p>Say you have the problem 9 + 7.<\/p><p> Knock the number 7 down by 1; you get 6.<\/p><p> Now add 10: 16<\/p><ul><li><p>9 + 7 = 16<\/p><\/li><li><p> It works every time. Consider this bigger problem:<\/p><\/li><li><p>9 + 63<\/p><\/li><li><p>Knock 63 down by 1: 62.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Now add 10: 72.<\/p><\/li><li><p>9 + 63 = 72<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>If a Number Is Divisible by 9, All Its Digits Add Up to a Multiple of 9<\/p><p>This is one of the fun math facts that resembles the 3s trick,<\/p><p>You can tell if a number is divisible by 9 if all its digits add up to 9.<\/p><ul><li><p> 36: 3 + 6 = 9<\/p><\/li><li><p> 108: 1 + 0 + 8 = 9<\/p><\/li><li><p> 990: 9 + 9 + 0 = 18<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>When You Add or Multiply, the Answer Is the Same No Matter the order<\/p><p>This is another interesting math fact (it\u2019s called the commutative property).<\/p><p><br\/><\/p><p>When you multiply a string of numbers, they can be in any order.
