PLANTING THE SEEDS: How early mathematical learning grows into deep understanding with Mark Saul, Ph.D., Executive Director, Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival

We who teach mathematics are very fortunate. We can take advantage of a certain unity to the field. Early steps in arithmetic and geometry can lead to insights that later deepen into profound concepts. Conversely, we can structure activities for very young children—puzzles and games, as well as more traditional activities–which introduce them to ideas that will mature with them. In this talk, we will explore ways to connect early mathematics with the mathematics of middle school, high school, and even undergraduate education.
