Can Maths be Fun? Puzzle Pirates Workshop!
October 18, 2019 @ 12:00 - 13:00| Free
Can Maths Be Fun?
Audience: Suitable for 4th, 5th, 6th Class groups.
The journey for young puzzle pirates takes the young mathematicians to the world of puzzling. The mixture of activities brings about predictability, surprise, wonderment and the feeling of self-satisfaction.
The young mathematicians will participate in different mathematical tasks as they go along. Samples of activities can be found at here, and there is also a PowerPoint presentation. At each of the stations the young mathematicians could be solving puzzles using calculators, pentominoes, playing cards, tangrams, dominoes. I am creating activities all the time and so this page may change from time to time. The final round brings all the young mathematicians together where they are tasked with lateral thinking questions which brings the event to an exciting conclusion.
Douglas Buchanan’s presentations give participants the opportunity to solve various puzzles working in pairs or small groups. It gives them the chance to collaborate and also allows them to stretch their mathematical skills.
Douglas travels around the United Kingdom hosting maths challenges which attract, on average, 35 schools and also runs puzzling workshops. He is a regular visitor at Maths Week Ireland and he also visits Kenya with his puzzling. His aim is to make maths teaching and learning meaningful and appealing by keeping away from the textbook and presenting the subject through problem solving.
Suitable for 4th, 5th, 6th Class groups.
