Probability and Making Bad Decisions. Dr Padraig Kirwan
11.45 am
Audience: secondary school senior cycle
Probability is an area of Mathematics that stemmed from a question about throwing two dice. It is frequently applied to real-life situations in a bad way. In this talk we will examine examples of this, such as the O.J. Simpson murder trial and the explosion of the Space Shuttle in 1986. We will look at why a failure to understand probability often means that people make bad decisions. TV game shows will also be used to explain bad probability.
