Abstract: Mathematics has had a huge impact on public health in the last 150 years,
from proving that dirty water spread cholera (before the cholera bacillus was
discovered), to the creation of images using ultrasound or CAT scans.
Professor John McCarthy grew up in Limerick, and went to school at JFK and Glenstal.
He was an undergraduate student at Trinity, and also got a Master's degree there.
He earned his Ph.D. at Berkeley, and worked at Washington University in St. Louis.
He is spending this year as visiting Professor at Trinity, and he says "I love being back".
