School Activities for Mathsweek 2011

Junior Infants searched the school grounds for numbers 1 and 2. Battling a strong wind, in teams they worked together to find both numbers. We had great fun!

We made 2d and 3d shapes using marshmallows and cocktail sticks.They especially loved making the 3d ones - the triangular prism was considered the coolest!

4,5th and 6th classes attended events in Helix, DCU. Senior classes also received in school maths workshops encorporating fun games and activities. Senior Maths classes also designed a School Maths Trail (to be tested on Friday!)2nd and 3rd classes completed in school maths circuits with 5 stations including maths puzzles, DS maths games and tangrams. The whole school completed an estimate of cubes in a container, this helped raise awareness of maths week. Teachers solved daily maths problems using maths week link and NRICH website. It was a great success and is likely to have some longlasting influence in children's attitudes towards maths.

Brilliant week - Wear a Number day & Maths Challenge around school most popular. Also had a Maths Family of year competition won by our Principal & his two sons!! Children had lots of fun and so did the adults. Thanks to all who joined in. Out Lady's and St. Mochua's PS Derrynoose.

The whole school will complete numerical activities including games and investigations where all 5 attainment targets will be addressed.

Portaferry Integrated Primary has been engaging in a whole range of Mathematics this week in celebration of Maths Ireland Week. Activities include on-line games, number puzzles and interactive whiteboard challenges.

We got on great and a group from our sixth class pupils created 2D and 3D Shape display posters for a Numeracy Area in the school. They also labelled and identified household items e.g. Washing powder boxes , CD Covers, Pringle packets into their relevant shapes so we can see how shapes are all around us .

The whole school took part in a Maths Fair and each class demonstrated different maths activities. The Pre-School children had shape and colour matching activities and tower building which encouraged the use of big/bigger/biggest language. Josephine's class showed pattern activities using 2 colours with pegboards and compare bears. They also showed us how to use the balance scales to work out how heavy objects were. Oonagh's class had been working on 2D shapes and asked us to identify and estimate shapes in jars and make coloured shapes on geoboards with elastic bands. Helen's class got us all thinking with their magic squares. Paula's class puzzled us all with a variety of maths puzzles including tangram pictures, The Square Triangle, Three Squares, Upturn the Glass and Turn the Fish. Eva's class designed a place value competition in which we had to make the highest number up to six figures using dice. Each class had a go at all the activites as did the staff and parents! Great fun!!!
