Minister Sherlock Presents John Hooper Medal
Maths Week Ireland is particularly pleased that this presentation is happening during Maths Week 2011. This is an excellent initiative to encourage young people to use maths to help understand their world. The quality of the entries is excellent an the huge number (101) in the first year shows that this event will grow over the coming years to be a major event in the school calendar. It is an excellent challenge for secondary school students. Information about participating in the 2012 competition can be found here.
This prestigious medal will be awarded today (20th October 2011) to the winning project in the CSO, Central Statistics Office, competition.
The John Hooper Medal for Statistics was launched by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on the first World Statistics Day on 20th October 2010. 256 student groups in total registered for the competition from the whole island of Ireland. 101 posters, both Irish and English language entries, were received in the CSO.
The purpose of the competition is to improve students' abilities to describe their world with the help of statistics and to use statistics as a tool for making sense of daily life.
According to the CSO, the inaugural John Hooper Medal for Statistics competition was a great success this year. The CSO paid tribute to all the schools, teachers and students who took part and made the competition such a success, saying "It is heartening to see the depth of creativity, talent and knowledge displayed in the posters submitted. Congratulations to all the students who took part in the competition and submitted a poster."
The 101 posters were initially judged by a team from the CSO according to the judging criteria outlined by the International Statistical Literacy Program and 12 posters were shortlisted for the final judging phase.
