Minister Sherlock launches 'European Mathematics Success’
AT the RDS today, the importance of mathematics to the European economy was marked.
Speaking at today’s launch of ‘European Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics’, Mr Sean Sherlock T.D., Minister for Research and Innovation, said that the book clearly demonstrated the benefits of collaboration between research and industry.
“Across business sectors, from health to energy to the car industry, this book illustrates where collaboration between some of Europe’s leading researchers has led to a very real and tangible benefit to industry. And I am pleased to see several Irish successes included in this excellent publication,” Minister Sherlock said.
The book, ‘European Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics’, is a collaboration by a number of authors showing the very real application of mathematics to solving problems and driving innovation across a range of business sectors. It is the result of a foresight initiative of the European Science Foundation and the European Mathematical Society on the importance of mathematics in research and innovation for the European industry.
The Minister added: “The examples in the book show where the application of mathematical solutions has resulted in processes becoming more efficient – both in time and cost; more environmentally friendly and safer. Mathematics should be embraced both in our every-day lives and in business as an enabler of the future, a driver of innovation.”
Minister Sherlock concluded by saying “It is fitting that this book is being launched during Ireland’s Maths Week, a national initiative to encourage our young people to enjoy maths and understand its value and application.”
“Ireland must, if we are to reach our full potential and compete on a global stage, ensure that we foster the development of mathematicians and bring them together with industry to generate progress and innovation.”
“That is why the Government is committed to the reform of our Maths and Science teaching and why it is essential that, through the likes of Science Foundation Ireland and other state agencies, we continue to foster collaboration between researchers in mathematics and Irish-based industry.”
‘European Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics’ was edited by Thibaut Lery, Mario Primicerio, Maria J. Esteban, Magnus Fontes, Yvon Maday, Volker Mehrmann, Gonçalo Quadros, Wil Schilders, Andreas Schuppert, Heather Tewkesbury.
Today’s event took place at the RDS, Dublin.
