School Activities for MathsWeek 2010

The children had great fun discovering patterns in clothes and all around our classroom. They created their own colour patterns using beads, cubes and on our interactive whiteboard! We would love to win another one for our school:)

Matching activities,shape pictures,animal pictures, symmetrical inkblobs,computer games, board games,& a treasure hunt in the grounds using coordinates were all part of our Maths week activities

All classes in the school did maths trails. They were very enjoyable and successful. Something we will do again. Betty Murphy, Stonehall, N.S.

We completed two maths trails - one inside and one outside the school. The children are new to the school, so they had a great time finding out about their new school and discovering some mathematical information about the school along the way.

After a week of maths trails, maths tests, a traffic survey and a week long mental maths quiz, we finally had a maths champion.

We had a great time! The magician for junior and senior was brilliant, our two 6th classes were abuzz with the mangamaths online challenge and the sumdog site enjoyed by the 5th classes too. Most classes from 1st to 6th did maths trails and those that didn't get the chance, (we were also doing standardised testing!!!!) are going to finish them next week. Maths week x2!!!

We had great fun. We designed our own maths games individually and in groups. We then played some of them. We went on a Maths trail around our school and we had fun making 'human Maths art'.

Junior Infants to First Class participated in online maths games based on colours,shapes and pattern sequencing.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the Maths games and activities. One group were studying the topic of The Irish famine'. To link with Maths they visited a local supermarket where they found out the range of potatoes and potato products for sale. They examined the packaging to establish the cost and where the potatoes were grown and packaged. On returning to their classroom they found out the distance the potatoes/products had travelled by using scale.In general alot of maths work done!!

It was really good fun. We went outside to do our maths. We got to look at number plates of cars and to record their colours on tally charts and block graphs. John Y3

Our Maths activities were very successful. The children really enjoyed working in small groups creating patterns using a variety of materials.

We did a Maths trail in the locality.We looked for different shapes,different colours ,looked for numbers in registration plates and counted trees.The children completed a worksheet.It was amazing how many times we have walked past that particular area and not noticed all the learning that was possible there!

Students enjoyed the Mangahigh Challenge. A number took part in the Prism Maths competition. TY students took part in a maths table quiz. Al went down well.

maths trail today was a great success, the children were delighted with themselves and how many shapes they wrere able to find in the school grounds. We will be taking maths outdoors more often. They are getting very good at counting and adding and comparing the items that they bring in for the nature table, eg. Fionn brought in 5 conkers and Joshua brought in 4, how many altogether? who has more? how many do we need to give Josh to make them the same?. I strognly believe that for maths education to work it must be practical and relevant to the child's everyday life.

A great success-every child got involved and was very enthusiastic

Each year group carried out activities relating to different maths work. We had sock and shoe sorting, identifying shapes in the school environment, mapping out routes and directions to areas within the school, shapes walks, symmetry in insects, machines and buildings and using menus to cost and budget. We took photos, put up displays of our work and made powerpoint presentations of the things we did to celebrate Maths Week Ireland.

The 4th Class group went on a Maths Trail around the school grounds. Tasks included number work, shapes and lines.The 5th and 6th Class group enjoyed working with some online Maths games especially Cool Math 4Kids. We discovered that Maths can be fun.

We had a great time with our local primary school participating in our outdoor maths activites and then finishing off with some online maths games.Thanks to all the teachers and students that helped out.Already looking forward to next year

LENGTH/SCALE: We've been designing rooms and drawing them to scale!

Our school held a Maths Table Quiz for 77 pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th classes. Each team had pupils from all three classes with all 36 questions non class specific e.g. matching objects with their weights, sudokus, probability and chance. We used our assembly hall and a data projector and large screen to display the questions. Almots none of the 36 questions involved addition, subtraction, multiplication or addition. The fun aspect of Maths was most important!

2 fun events ran through the week..... 1. the kids all got to use their own teacher made cleanable notation whiteboard with markers, to learn and understand addition of 3 digit numbers with renaming....such enthusiasm to use these materials...all revealed answers at same moment so very easy to see mistakes and spot the problem...90% correct every time!!! 2. All took part in an interactive addition tables challenge on Schoolhub website...bursting balloon with correct answer,,,timed...highest score won...such enthusiasm again....will defo continue this challenge next week to reinforce addition number facts....and best part is they are ALL begging to play :)

We got all first years and second years to do posters which were interesting and funny. All the senior students took great interest in these and the sparked many interesting maths discussion. The whole school done Prism but the question were too hard. Please make them a bit easier next year. Your website is great. Well done. Thanks Carl

Naionain Shoisearacha up to Rang a 6 from SN na Duchoraidh in Donegal took part in maths computer games, puzzles and posters. We also included the parents to try to solve maths puzzles.

We enjoyed the Maths week activity here in Kilmactranny School. 5th and 6th Class designed the trail and 3rd and 4th class solved it. We have attached some pictures of the children in action.

Monday: Fifth year students were attending the RDS where Professor Marcus du Sautoy delivered a wonderful hour of Number Mysteries. Tuesday: Mathematics Teachers ran Maths Quizes and Maths Modeling in their classes Thursday: Maths Trail Friday: Annual Maths Round Table Quiz for Seniors Busy week but well worth it.

At St. Mary's in Bagenalstown we had fun! We organised Maths Trails, played maths games - including learning a new game Mancala from 3rd - 6th. We also had Maths Share Homeworks where parents helped complete some fun sheets.

Maths week was a very exciting time for the children and teachers in our school. The children learned through active participation in lessons.

Fun and entertainment had by all in our new local community hall whilst we measured the dimensions for the forthcoming Christmas Concert. This was followed by the first ever Maths Quiz in our school ever!!! Dylan said "it was deadly!!!"

For mathsweek all classes participated in maths trails around our school. We also took part in online maths sites, puzzles, quizzes, tests, etc. Scoil Moling-Glynn, St. Mulins.

All classes in Holy Family School, Tralee participated in Maths Trails and Maths Quizzes to celebrate Maths Week 2010. The School Banner was hoisted to advertise the event. A very enjoyable week was had by all.

Three classes went to The Helix, on Tues 12th to attend 'The Magic of Maths' workshop by Dr Andrew Jeffery. All of the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the event and were extremely motivated by the presentation and positive message about maths. The 'I can't do it ... YET' mantra is one we have adopted in our school. The children thought the 7 times tables method was brilliant. All of the pupils registered and played on mangahigh. They enjoyed the fun aspect of the games.

The 3rd to 6th classes in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Maths Fun Day’. The tempting tangrams, fascinating fractions, cool calculators, super shape and magnificent multiplication activity tables were very entertaining as well as educating!

wonderful experience-our theme was maths in the wider world. Children took part in town trails, trails of the local park and charleville castle, evidence of maths in the wider world was displayed througout the school, e.g take away menus, receipts, etc. The boys explored their own school yard and made a trail based on that yard,including lines and angles, shape and space trails. For integration with another subject the coys made maths acrostic poems during poetry lessons in English. Overall very successful!!

Our school places a very important emphasis on number in maths so we were delighted to take part in Maths week. Our theme for the week was "number all around" and we used an integrated approach to demonstrate the importance of number in our lives. We read Six dinner Sid, we studied the poem A year full of days, we compared how many children liked to watch X Factor and The Simpsons. We counted steps taken between cones at PE to measure distance. The highlight of the week was a trip to the Helix to see "The Magic of Maths". The children really enjoyed this event and now use the "magic" word "YET" !! The children really enjoyed playing number games especially a "home made" version of Snakes and ladders where all played together so there was no losers!!

We had fun playing the games on Mangahigh on one of the days. Another day we played a communication game - each team had a geometrical picture at one end of the yard that they had to communicate to the 'artists' at the other end of the yard. On two days we solved logic based puzzles and on the last day we had a quiz. Wish we had more time in class for this type of thing. Back to the boring stuff on Monday :{

The week is not over yet - we at Holy Family GNS, Carlow. have all been busy at Maths this week. Yesterday 2nd to 6th class had a wonderful day with 'Mathworks', from the UK. The whole school left uniforms at home and wore clothes with Maths on - patterns, shapes, symbols,numbers, equations etc. There was even a Maths Teddy! Maths is evident on bulletin boards around the school - shapes, patterns, maths in art, 3D shapes, maths all around us, maths puzzles and more. Severla classes have gone on Maths walks.

It was a great success in the school. The first year group had a ball with the treasure hunt organised by a very helpful TY group and the 2nd years really enjoyed the quiz. Also some of the TY group took time to try out the PRISM challenge for the first time.

Had a maths treasure hunt indoors - questions covering all strands with letter clue for right answer. (1st. + 2nd Classes really enjoyed these varied clues- Treasure, when found, was edible - chocolate coins - yum!!! Math Trail- outdoor activity for 4th + 5th classes. Shape and problem solving activities in our immediate environment. They loved it. "Can we do it again tomorrow?" - most requested. They loved it!

We got on great, we had a Maths trail and we played a fraction, decimals and percentages game. The children loved it!

Extremely enjoyable. Infants & 1st played lots of maths games and explored k'nex for the week. 2/3/4th classes participated in maths trails, recognised maths in their environment and explored the calculator, while 5th & 6th set up a maths for fun programme and invited parents to participate with them.The senior classes also supported 'maths buddies'and assisted the junior children in completing various maths activities.

Mathsweek was a great success this year. Everyone in the school got involved.There was an art competition called "mathsmatters" where children made maths themed mouse mats for the computer. Every day maths puzzles were read out over the intercom and winners given golden ticket prizes.Junior children were vissited by the maths wizard who announced their puzzle and presented the winner from each class with one of his maths wizard hats for the night.Every class displayed maths art raniging from data and symmetry to number and shape and space.The maths display table encouraged the curiosity of many children with maths puzzles and maths items like weights, timetables, money, calculators, calenders and shapes. Each class tried out their maths trail for th school and 5th class girls played maths yard games with junior chldren at lunchtime. To end the week senior girls played maths board games with junior girls in their classrooms on Friday.We even had a mths poem on the school intercom.

The children had great fun 'playing a game' not realising until it was over that it required mathetical exercises !!! It was a simple tables game that engaged them and focused them on quick short answers.Their concentration and thinking skills really improved.

The maths games we played each day went down a treat. Working on the mangahigh website instead of regular maths homework was a very popular treat for my class!

St. Maries of the Isle Primary School are participating in Maths Week 2010

Junior Infants learned some new number rhymes, made coloured patterns and maths posters.Senior Infants had a Maths Trail. Mrs. Hartnett's class learned some new number rhymes. 1st class had a number quiz, a maths trail and played loop games. 2nd Class made some graphs and played loop games. 3rd class measured the school yard and had a quiz. 5th and 6th class had a Maths Trail.

After our bug hunt, we used our plastic bugs to count, classify, sort and group. We even made a bug pictogram. We love bugs and we love Maths!

Maths Week was a great success in our school - 'Games all around' was our theme- linked to shape, money and Jack and the Beanstalk in Learning Support where students built a beanstalk, created a house for Jack and devised a shape questionnaire based on the shapes in Jack's house. We also had our WSE during Maths Week so the pressure was on!

We participated in the mangahigh online maths challenge. We finished 5th in Ireland and 8th in the world.We are very proud of our achievement.

The pupils of Coláiste na hInse have been participating in Suduko relay races ,Maths treasure hunt,Countdown conundrums , maths murder mysteries,solving daily puzzles ,and had a pi! making competition. Great fun was had by all.Students also learned about Phi and the Fibonnaci sequence

We had hoped to go to Blackrock Observatory but it was booked out. We did extra maths puzzles and our student of the week award was for Maths this week. An imaginary maths family joined our class for the week and we tried to keep them happy by making an extra effort with our maths and by linking maths to other things we were doing during the week. Good fun and plenty of learning!

Our Maths Event was a massive success. The whole school from Infants to Sixth Class participated in a Maths Trail around the school grounds.

We did a module on problem-solving, so that the children had to read problems carefully, look for the important information, think laterally and come up with a solution. We used a lot of concrete materials and also some websites. The children helped a farmer divide up his sheep,a snail reach the top of a wall, a man transport his cabbage, cheep and wolf across a river, another famer divide up his pigs, a man find pairs of socks, and a sweetshop owner count sweets into jars. All the problems had a direct relevance to real life, and the children thoroughly enjoyed the project.

We had a super week with Maths Week. Every child in the school got to use technology to learn something about Maths. From Interactive Whiteboards and Digital Cameras to iPads and laptops, everyone had great fun. All are events can be found on our school web site.

Excellent, worked on area and perimeter in a practical way with weak students using the school vegetable garden.The ovrall area was measured and then the beds were measured individually. A great way for them to realise that maths is practical and used in everyday life.

At OLV boys we've continued our activities into this week because there was so much interest in the maths puzzles. 4 6class boys organised a maths circuit for classes to experience. The circuit included maths puzzles like moving the equilateral triangle, tangrams, tetris cube, DS maths games and even more puzzles with concrete materials. It was a great success! First and Second Classes enjoyed a Maths Trail. It was a beautiful day so the Trail took place around the school grounds. The children measured, counted, found shapes, drew sketches and took a traffic survey. All agreed that Maths are fun!

On Monday our challenge for all the children and their parents was "Guess the length of the piece of string". We had Round I of "Finding the Maths Brain of Scoil Mhuire" for 5th and 6th classes and we also held a 6x6 Sudoku challenge for 2nd class.

We took the Mangahigh online maths challenge with our first years.They LOVED it!Most students completed their challenges at home with their families.It was an added bonus as parents were aware that it was Maths week as well.They really embraced it.I was initially apprehensive about bring 1st years to the computer room but thanks to Maths week this fear has been removed and we now are in the computer room once a week every Thursday.It is the one class of the week WE really look forward to.I cannot say thanks enough!!

Our whole school took part in fun maths trails around the school. Our school is all girls and they loved bringing maths out of the classroom and making it great fun!

We got on great. We did our Paired Maths for the whole month with our Mums and Dads at home. We had great fun doing our maths trail with our Mums and Dads around the school. Our parents came into the school and designed the maths trail along with a teacher in our school, we had great fun today going around the school answering all of the questions. MATHS IS SO MUCH FUN!!!! by all of the children Ms Crawford's 1st class and Ms Kelly's 2nd class in St. Eunan's N.S. Raphoe.

Senior Infants had a very busy week but a thoroughly enjoyable week! We played Maths games-Snakes and Ladders, Number Bingo, Connect 4, Incy Wincy and Birthday Candles. We completed a Maths Trail which included: Set Sorters, Data Detectives, Letter Locaters, Shape Shufflers, Bin Busters, Shelter Seekers and Travelling Teams . These consisted of counting, measuring, sorting, recording,identifying shapes and colours and using spatial language.Teacher was busy catching us in action. We have our pictures on display for all to see!

We had a maths treasure hunt and used the x y axis over the map to find places. each location had a new maths question and the final clue led to a room full of sweets and lemonade. we loved using the trundle wheels and clinometers to find the height of buildings and area.

6th class geocaching, 5th did a school-wide survey and long jumps, infants learned songs with numbers, staff had great fun with puzzles at lunch time. Using a code, we wrote all teachers' names in number on stickers which the teachers wore proudly! Great week!

We at St Joseph's extremely enjoyed Maths week. The children had great fun and are really looking forward to next year.

Ms Crowe's Fifth Class class at Christ the King Senior Girls are participating in Maths Week 2010

three teachers from Christ the King Senior Girls' School in Cabra attended Dr. Maths in Marino on Monday 11th of October. Great fun!

Maths week went very well, we had a most enjoyable and interesting Maths Trail all around the school and its environs, the Maths talk of the children was most interesting.

During Maths Week 6th class Room 5 participated in a Maths Trail. Amongst other activities, we examined the shape of our school and drew a map to scale. We counted all the cars in the car park, listed the makes of cars and drew some of the symbols. We examined our school plaque, and found the sum and product of the numbers. We completed a Maths Orienteering course. We were divided into 4 teams and were given a map of the school and a score card. We had to follow the map to various stops around the school and work out the clues at the different stops. It was great craic! We played 'Who wants to be a Mathionaire?' We are all Mathionaires now!

We were cubed, bisected and dissected, and at times totally perplexed. Overall we are infinitely better off for the experience. We count on making an addition during successive years .

2nd and 3rd class took part in the Maths trail, it was great fun and everyone enjoyed it. Laura Burns estimate was the closest to the Total amount of sweet in the tub in 2nd class and in 3rd class Eve O Sullivan estimate was the closest

We had a Maths Trail in the school grounds and played lots of Maths games on the Internet.

Great week. We came Joint first in the mangahigh competition. We will continue to compete in the managhigh global contest over the next two weeks. Over 100 students sat the prism test. Most students completed the maths trail in school. There was a great buzz around the school. Unfotunately we couldn't attend external activities due to high costs and distance but we are looking at possibly hosting an event locally next year.

We went on a Maths Treasure Trail through the village of Carlingford. All of the questions involved working out a Maths question or finding a geometric shape from a series of clues.

Mother of Divine Grace School have set up the school's very first maths committee(comprising of 20 pupils, 2 pupils from each class 2nd to 6th). The student committee and the maths co-ordinator are busy launching the schools very first maths magazine. The maths magazine will be available once a month, fostering important home-school links.

On Friday I held a Maths Quiz for classes 3rd-6th. The children really enjoyed it. The children also played Maths games on the internet and some of the children opted for Multiplication 'Bingo'. We all had a lovely afternoon.

O'Carolan College students took part in the Prism Maths Competition on Thursday as part of our Maths week activities. 60 students participated, which is our biggest number to date. Congrats to all involved, it was a great success.

Our middle and senior classes took part in a Maths Trail around the school area. We completed questions on place value, lined and angles, shape and space and measures. We used the compass, measuring tapes, our knowledge of horizontal and vertical lines to complete it. There was a lot of estimation involved too. Early in the week we played maths games and had fun with addition tables challenges. The photograph shows one of the gropus completing the question on the compass directions

The junior classes thought maths week was great because “they didn't have maths classes”! It is amazing, when they are having fun using maths their attitude is so positive. The biggest hit was the maths treasure hunt around the school - one pupils came back sweaty and red faced and he told us "that was the best maths class every"! None of the pupils made it up to the million euro on "Maths Millionaire" but the effort they made trying to get there was heartening to watch. Hopefully we will be able to make these activity more interactive next year:)
