MathsWeek 2010
Maths Week Ireland 2010 is now over and we look forward to 2011!
2010 was our most successful yet! It kicked off with Maths in the City in Dublin on Saturday 9th and finished with the Hamilton Walk on Saturday the 16th. In between we had Maths in the City in Waterford, Limerick and Belfast and about 100 other events around the island. In addition over 85,000 young people in schools North and South did exciting and engaging maths activities specially for Maths Week! Surpassing the expectations of the organisers and showing the appetite among our young people for well presented and packaged mathematics and the interest and dedication of teachers all over Ireland. Check out all the great activities that have been posted on this website!
Lecturers from Higher Educational Institutes put on great presentations for visiting groups. Our International visitors were a big hit again With Marcus dusautoy enthralling over 1,000 people at the RDS, Andrew Jeffrey entertained over 1300 pupuils at DCU's Helix and Steve Humble did Maths in the Pub. Fernando Blasco, Matt Parker, Colin Wright, Rob Eastaway, Kjartan Poskitt, Paco Gomez, Robert Hill and Jenny Piggott all motivated thousands accross the island. The 16th is Hamilton Day, commemorating the day that William Rowan Hamilton discovered quaternions in 1843. Every year the Maths department at NUI Maynooth organises the Hamilton Walk from Dunsink to Broom Bridge to celebrate this event. This year for the 5th annual Maths Week Ireland, we had fun maths games, puzzles and performances at Dunsink for all the family.
Maths Week 2010 has broken all the records with over 86,000 pupils on the island doing activities in school and attending events. Together with all the other things going on that indicates that over 100,000 people participated.this year. And we'll start working now to beat that next year.
Coordinated by Calmast at Waterford Institute of Technology, Maths Week Ireland is a partnership of universities, institutes and interested groups working together to promote awareness, appreciation and understanding of mathematics to all. Thanks to all our sponsors for supporting this important work.
We have a post-event survey for teachers at 5 year mark to help us learn how we should develop in the future. If you are a teacher that participated in maths Week Ireland., please visit the survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/mathsweek2010
MANGA HIGH
Mangahigh is operating a free maths game competition alongside Maths Week 2010. All schools in Ireland will have free access to Mangahigh from 24th Sept to 16th October.
About Maths Week 2010
Maths Week 2010 will kick off with Maths in the Street in Dublin City Centre on Saturday the 9th. Around 30 volunteers worked with professional presenters last year engaging thousands of people of all ages. This year we will also pilot Maths in the Street in Belfast and Waterford. If you’d like to get involved in this fun event please let us know.
Many international presenters will be coming over, including Prof. Marcus du Sautoy who will give a talk for TY & Senior Cycle students at the RDS on Monday 11th October.
There will be many several evening events. Check the events page for details.
Marcus du Sautoy will be giving a public lecture on the evening of the 11th, also at the RDS. Maths in the pub with the Alchemist Cafe will happen again in Dublin.
Mathematics in the practice of finance will be the subject of the RIA Hamilton Lecture by Prof. Robert C. Merton on Friday the 15th. The week will end with the Hamilton Walk which will take place as usual from Dunsink to Broom Bridge, Cabra on the 16th.
Check the website regularly as it will be updated, as events are confirmed, from now until the festival .
Maths Week Ireland has now managed to achieve two of its founding objectives - it has a good geographical spread throughout the island and there is a high participation from schools. We are currently working on the next phase - exploring how to extend the impact and activity of maths Week Ireland throughout the full year. If you wish to participate please email Eoin Gill, Maths Week Ireland coordinator at mathsweek@wit.ie
